The fluid level gun is used during acoustic surveys in oil and gas wells. In this acoustic surveys the distance from the wellhead to the fluid level is determined. The fluid level gun is therefore filled with carbon dioxide, nitrogen or gas from the wellbore to generate a pressure pulse that travels down the well and is reflected by the fluid level.
The Pressure Pulse Gun 5000 psi consists of a volume chamber that may be isolated from the well by closing an integrated ball valve. After the fluid level gun is connected to the casing or the tubing flow line the volume chamber is charged at a pressure higher than the wellhead pressure. To trigger the fluid level gun the internal ball valve is rapidly opened and closed. Due to the pressure differential between volume chamber and wellbore a positive pressure pulse is generated. This pressure pulse travels down the well and echoes from the fluid level. A dual disc pressure sensitive microphone inside the gas gun senses those echoes and converts them into 4 to 20 mA output signals.
Instead of charging the fluid level gas gun with an external gas source, gas from the wellbore may be vented into the volume chamber, causing a negative pressure pulse traveling down the well and back. An external gas source is not needed but a wellhead pressure of at least 50 to 100 psi is required.
